Study of Covenants

Welcome to our first podcast as we set the stage for the purpose and goal for our podcasts as well as introduce our first topic – covenants.  We are two sisters who love the Bible and have spent years learning and teaching about this amazing book. Join with us as we begin to unpack an important part of the Biblical story. What are covenants and who makes them? How long do they last, and why does this matter to us today?

In this episode Erika and Veronica discuss the first two covenants in Scripture and the lessons we can learn from them.

Erika then digs into Genesis 8:20 – 9:17 as she lays out the stipulations of the covenant – stipulations for both man and God.  There are more layers to the rainbow than just the happy reminder God will never flood the entire earth again.  We have a responsibility to deal with the evil in our own lives. She recited Psalm 130.

Erika quickly taught on what it means in the Hebrew culture when God “remembers” someone or something. She also mentioned the 5 week Tabernacle/Temple study that is available to watch on YouTube under “Biblical Background with Veronica and Erika.”

In this episode Veronica starts the discussion on the Abrahamic Covenant.  Scripture references are Genesis 11:29 through Genesis 14 and Hebrews 6:13-14. Veronica walks through the specific promises God made to Abraham and then showed how that actually happened in Abraham’s lifetime.

Veronica continues the discussion on the Abrahamic covenant.  We are in Genesis 15.

In this discussion we talk about Abraham’s need for a son to carry on the covenant.  Erika shares the Middle Eastern perspective on descendants and why they are so important.

Veronica concludes the Abrahamic Covenant in Genesis 17-22.  We discuss the sign of the covenant in the flesh while reminding ourselves that God also desires circumcision of the heart (Deuteronomy 10:16).

From Abraham’s interaction with Abimelech to Abraham sacrificing Isaac, Abraham’s faith grew.  Faith again is defined as action plus belief.  Veronica cited Hebrews 11:17-19.

Erika lays a foundation for the Mosaic Covenant. Using Exodus 2:23-25, she reminds us that God “knew” and remembered what what happening with Abraham’s descendants, who have become so numerous they are called a swarm (seen in the Hebrew in Exodus 1:7). God promised Abraham that Israel would be used to bless the nations in Genesis 12:1-3. Miraculously He rescues and redeems His people out of Egypt. That event is so important it is alluded to in every book in the Old Testament.

Erika starts the discussion of the Mosaic covenant found in Exodus 24.  She also explains table fellowship and the deeper meaning behind it.

Erika explains the terms of the Mosaic covenant.

Erika wraps up the Mosaic covenant.  She explores the long range affects of this covenant through King Solomon.  We also discussed the sign of the Mosaic covenant.

Not only does Veronica introduce the Davidic covenant but she concludes the Davidic covenant all in this podcast! Starting in 2 Samuel 7:9-16, she explains the terms and the sign of this covenant.  God renews the covenant with David’s son in 1 Kings 9:1-9, but a shocking twist happens in 1 Kings 11:38-39.  Erika then expands on this twist in the covenant and shows how Jesus is linked to the house of David and the house of Joseph in an extraordinary way.

Our study on covenants has concluded but it’s been so long we thought it would be good to wrap up and tie the covenants all together.   Veronica shares with us the picture she has of how all the covenants work together.
